Visiting the site
When you open a page, our web server receives the usual technical data: your IP address, the date and time, the page, your browser and device type. We use it to deliver the pages and to protect the site against abuse. These server logs are kept only for a short time and are not used to build profiles.
Cookies and storage on your device
We only use what the site needs to work. We do not use advertising, analytics or social media tracking cookies, so we do not ask for cookie consent.
- Session and security cookies: keep you signed in and protect forms (for example XSRF-TOKEN).
- Settings stored in your browser (local storage): your language, city and country, your list, likes and where you stopped watching, the candles you lit, and a random device number. The device number lets the site recognise the same phone again, for example so you can take down your own noticeboard post or connect your devices with Sync. It does not contain your name.
- You can delete all of this at any time in your browser settings; the site then forgets your settings.
Your account
If you create an account we keep your name, email address, password (stored hashed, so nobody can read it) and profile, and what you do in your account such as your list and watch history. If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your name, email address and profile picture. We use this to run your account. You can ask us at any time to delete your account.
What you send us with a form
Nothing you send with a form appears on the site until our team has checked and approved it.
- Tamil directory: the details of the place are shown publicly. Your own name and email are only seen by our team, in case we have a question.
- Remembrance notices: the notice is shown publicly, including the photo, the dates, the home town and the family contact you give. Your name, phone number, email and relation to the person are only seen by our team: we use them to call you and confirm the notice with the family before it goes online, and we write down how we confirmed it. Please only send a notice if you are family or the family agrees. The family can ask us at any time to change or remove a notice.
- Noticeboard: your post and the contact details you write in it are shown publicly for 7, 14 or 30 days. The phone or computer you posted from can take the post down at any time.
- Events, films for the creator corner and song dedications: what you send is used to check it and, once approved, to show it on the site.
- Song quiz: if you join the leaderboard, the nickname you choose and your score are shown publicly.
- Ask the community: once approved, your question or answer and the name you choose are shown publicly. We keep the device number to prevent misuse.
- Astrology and baby names: the birth details you type in and your favourite names stay on your device; they are not sent to us.
- Reports: when you report something, we keep the reason, your note and the device number, so we can check it and prevent misuse.
- When we approve your place, notice or post, we send you one email with the link. We do not send newsletters or advertising.
Services that help us run the site
We use the following companies. They only get the data they need for their task. Some are outside Switzerland and the EU (mainly in the USA); where this is the case, the transfer is protected by an adequacy decision (such as the EU-US and Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework) or by standard contractual clauses.
- DigitalOcean (USA): the server that runs the website and stores accounts and forms.
- UpCloud (Finland, server in the Netherlands): prepares movies and music for streaming.
- Cloudflare (USA): stores and delivers videos, music and pictures, and some code libraries (cdnjs).
- jsDelivr: delivers some code libraries the pages use.
- Google (USA/Ireland): fonts (Google Fonts), YouTube videos and pictures on some pages (videos only start, through youtube-nocookie.com, when you press play), sign-in with Google if you choose it, and translation of some site texts.
- Live TV: when you open Live TV, and when the site checks which channels are on air, your browser connects directly to the TV stations' own streaming servers.
- Telegram: our team gets a short message (name or title and city) when something new waits for approval.
- Our email provider: sends the approval emails and account emails such as password resets.
- Facebook, Instagram, X and WhatsApp are only contacted when you click a link or a share button.
How long we keep data
- Account: as long as your account exists.
- Directory places and remembrance notices: as long as they are online, and after that only as long as needed. The family can ask for a notice to be removed at any time.
- Noticeboard posts: shown until they end or are taken down, and deleted automatically 3 months later.
- Declined submissions: deleted automatically 3 months after we decline them.
- The sender's details and our checking notes: as long as the item exists.
- Server logs: a short time, for security.
Why we may use your data
We follow the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, for visitors in the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We use your data to provide what you ask for (your account, your post), because you chose to send it to us, and because we have a legitimate interest in running a safe site that is free from abuse.
Your rights
You can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, limit or object to its use, and get a copy. Where you gave us something by choice, you can take that back at any time. Write to [email protected]; we answer within 30 days.
You can also complain to a data protection authority: in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (edoeb.admin.ch), in the EU the authority of your country.
Children
The Kids corner and Learn Tamil pages do not ask for any personal data. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account or send a form.
Security
The site uses an encrypted connection (https). Only our team can see what is not public, and pictures you send are checked before they are shown.
Changes
When we change how we use data, we update this page and the date at the top.
